Adding COBRA subsidies

Some companies will cover a portion of an employee's post-employment benefits as part of their severance package. At Kept you could do this by offering them a COBRA subsidy.

If you wish to add a COBRA subsidy to a former employee's Kept account, there are two ways you can do so:

Off-boarding document subsidy field

The first way is via the Off-boarding document in your Kept admin dashboard on the right side of your screen - and you can add the subsidy here before you've even processed the termination in the benefits admin system!

  • Click Get employee guide and search the employee's name
  • Select View guide
  • The employee's information will auto-populate, but you'll need to select Include subsidy
  • Select the details around the subsidy - you can choose dollar amount or percentage as well as the amount of months covered
  • Once you check the box and click Save the subsidy will be applied to the employee's account

Don't worry, it won't process a termination for the employee or notify them in any way! It will just hold the subsidy information to be applied once the Kept system receives notice of the termination.

The second way you can apply a subsidy is to a former employee already in their COBRA enrollment window.

  • Navigate to the employee's page either through the Members electing box on your dashboard or the People tab search on the lefthand side of your dashboard
  • Click the Enrollment details button
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page to Record new subsidy
  • Enter the desired subsidy information and save

Once you apply a subsidy via either of these methods, the employee will see the subsidy information on their account and it'll apply automatically to their bill. Once the subsidy ends, everything will automatically update so the employee becomes responsible for the full amount of the premium for the remainder of their COBRA coverage.
