How long does COBRA last?

Updated on
May 22, 2025

COBRA can last as short as one month, or as long as 3 years in some cases. COBRA is meant to be a temporary solution, so people can choose to cancel at anytime voluntarily. The coverage will eventually have an end date based on a few different factors, with the standard scenarios outlined below:

  • 18 months is the standard coverage period for job loss or reduction in hours.
  • 29 months if you qualify for a disability extension.
  • 36 months for other qualifying events, such as divorce or death of the covered employee.

The COBRA notice issued to you by Kept will outline your eligibility for your specific instance.
